Adjustment mechanism for the IEEE 802.11 contention window: An efficient bandwidth sharing scheme

چکیده
In this paper, we propose a new solution to cope with the unfairness limitations of the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) algorithm. Indeed, in current widely deployed IEEE 802.11b Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), the performance of all the competing access nodes are dramatically affected once the bit rate of one station degrades. This anomaly is due to the unfairness behavior of the DCF algorithm. To avoid this, our solution is based on multiple backoff windows principle. We demonstrate through both analytical models and simulations the efficiency of our proposal. Our results show that the proposed algorithm enables fair bandwidth sharing and increases significantly the total network throughput. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An Adaptive Opportunistic Transmission for Unlicensed Spectrum Sharing in Heterogeneous Networks
Efficient utilization of spectrum resources is a fundamental issue of wireless communications due to its scarcity. To improve the efficiency of spectrum utilization, the spectrum sharing for unlicensed bands is being regarded as one of key technologies in the next generation wireless networks. A number of schemes such as Listen-Before-Talk(LBT) and carrier sensor adaptive transmission (CSAT) ha...
متن کاملCross-Layer Scheme to Control Contention Window for Per-Flow in Asymmetric Multi-Hop Networks
The IEEE 802.11 MAC standard for wireless ad hoc networks adopts Binary Exponential Back-off (BEB) mechanism to resolve bandwidth contention between stations. BEB mechanism controls the bandwidth allocation for each station by choosing a back-off value from one to CW according to the uniform random distribution, where CW is the contention window size. However, in asymmetric multi-hop networks, ...
متن کاملA Novel Contention Window Control Scheme for IEEE 802.11 WLANs
In the IEEE 802.11 standard, network nodes experiencing collisions on the shared medium need a mecha‐ nism that can prevent collisions and improve the throughput. Furthermore, a backoff mechanism is used that uniformly selects a random period of time from the contention window (cw) that is dynamically controlled by the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm. Prior research has proved that t...
متن کاملModeling and Analysis of Slow CW Decrease for IEEE 802.11 WLAN
~Ihsrruci-~rhe IEEE 802.1 I Medium Access Control (MAC) protucol provides a contention-based distributed channel access mechanism for mobile stations to share the wireless medium, which may introduce a lot of collisions i n ease of overloaded active stations. Slow Contention Window (CW) decrease scheme is a simple and efficient solution for this problem. In this paper, we use an analytical mode...
متن کاملEffect of Contention Window on the Performance of IEEE 802.11 WLANs
In the IEEE 802.11, an exponential backoff has been adopted, which means whenever a collision occurs, the contention window (CW) of the station is doubled until it reaches the maximum value. The purpose of increasing CW is to reduce the collision probability by distributing the traffic into a larger time space. In this paper, we use a fixed contention window (FCW) scheme and then evaluate the p...
